Berries take on the division leaders

Saturday, 17th November: 4–1 loss.

This week, Berries entertained Spencer, currently top of Division 8. From the off, both sides were intent on attacking at a fast and furious pace. Spencer were first to get a shot away on goal, which was easily dealt with by Berries goalkeeper Lin. Not to be out-done, Berries were constantly in or around Spencer’s D but could not get a decent shot away.

The game was neck and neck, with both defences standing firm until 10 minutes from the end of the first half. Berries had gone close with a couple of shots but a few well positioned passes from Spencer unlocked the Berries defence for the first goal of the game.

A short corner to Spencer saw them secure a second goal. Berries tried to get themselves back in the game with some good exchanges between the halves and forwards but the ball would not cross the line – in fact the ball stopped on the line, only to be cleared by a Spencer stick!

Spencer broke again and a third goal was conceded despite the best efforts of the Berries defence. 3-0 down but in no way out, Berries began to keep possession a little better in the second half. Conceding another short corner saw Spencer make it 4-0. Berries were now having a lot more of the play with both Phoebe and Emma causing Spencer some concern down the wings.

Nikki and Grace combined to finally unlock the Spencer defence. Nikki slipping the ball through and Grace finishing off by slotting past the keeper. Spencer looked a little rattled but managed to keep repealing Berries attacks to hold out for the 4-1 win. Another great game from everyone involved!!

Final score: 4–1 win to Spencer

Tea score: 10 out of 10 – awarded by the Opposition (“best tea they have had this season!”)
